Ukraine 2022 is a fast play combined arms game, aimed at using printable unit chits provided along with the rules. 6mm or 15mm miniatures can also be used if desired.
The game covers all the main units used in the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, from infantry armed with a variety of support weapons such as NLAWs, Stugna-Ps, RPO-As, and SA-7s, to the usual BTR and BMP variants, to tanks, APCs, helicopters and UAVs. Fixed-wing aircraft and larger SAM systems are not represented, as the focus is on ground combat, with support from helicopters and drones.
The unit chits provided allow for easy reference of move distances, weapon types and ranges, as well as situational awareness. This game does not use a grid, and is still a traditional wargame in the sense of measuring distances and freedom of movement. The chits are 1" x 1.5" in size, making for easy handling and good readability.
Ukraine 2022 uses a novel order system, where players write orders on slips of paper and place them in a bag. Orders are randomly drawn from this bag, so you don't always have direct control of your forces - they may be reacting to orders from long ago, or you may see the enemy activating instead of your own forces. This injects chaos and uncertainty into the game, and creates a kind of "hands off" approach to unit activation. There are 4 orders: Move, Attack, Defensive Ambush, and Cautious Advance, and each order must have a direction such as "North", Northeast" etc. Units can conduct movement, detection and attacks in a 90 degree cone pointing in the direction of the order.
Solo play rules are provided, using the same chaotic order system, but done on a single sheet of paper and using a D6 to randomize which order is selected.
A printer-friendly version of the rules is also provided. Note that the printer-friendly version does not have the printable unit chits in the PDF - these should be printed from the full color PDF, on to thin card.
Play mat is not provided. A 4' x 4' play area is recommended for smaller games, and 6' x 4' for larger games.
