Shifting Realms: Darkness Revealed is an expansion to Shifting Realms. A copy of Shifting Realms is necessary to play Darkness Revealed. The base game includes 5 realms which are played 3 at a time offering 10 realm combinations and 60 unique board layouts. Shifting Realms:Darkness Revealed comes with 2 additional realms bringing the number of realm combinations to 35 with 210 board layouts.
The two new realms in Darkness Revealed are Knossos and Gehenna. Each realm comes with a board, structures, story cards, and task cards. The new realms introduce new synergies, mechanisms, and components to the base game.
Knossos, the undiscovered land of the minotaurs, introduces Search tiles and Labyrinth walls. Players need to search areas of the board to recover treasure before structures can be built in the realm. Players can place Labyrinth walls to block movement and building adjacency. Players also start the game drafting story cards which ramps up the first few turns of the game.
Gehenna, the dark land of the demons, offers players ways to directly interfere with the other players. Building Demon Towers enables players to capture opposing players units for victory points. Many of the story cards in this realm enable players to move opponents’ units within the realms.
