In The Fungus Kingdom, you search for mushrooms in forests and other dark places, then sell them in the kingdom's marketplace and to itinerant traders who appear periodically. With the assistance of various "masters", you could become the most successful collector/dealer, thereby obtaining the most money possible through your sales — and thus the most victory points (VPs). Of course to do this you must fight for the best seats with trade partners and ensure good relations with them.

Each player starts the game with an individual player board, six workers, six gold, and a mushroom card. By placing the appropriate number of workers on the various action spaces, you can purchase mushroom, land or water; buy or implement demand or master cards; purchase new warehouses or assistants; and produce or sell mushrooms. Players can hold five cards in hand from one round to the next, and after nine rounds players tally their VPs to see who wins.
