Torch & Blade is a pen and paper, solitaire, dungeon delving game set in a sword and sorcery world. You control intrepid adventurers braving dark and perilous dungeons in an attempt to bring back precious loot and complete arduous quests. The game can be played as a chronicle, an endless chronicle, or a short play campaign. No matter what game mode you choose, you will play several individual sessions, called acts.
During each act you will guide an adventurer through a randomly generated dungeon. The playing time for a single act, once you are familiar with the rules, should be between 60 and 120 minutes.
During a chronicle you will control several characters, alternating among them. At any point you will only have 2 to 4 active characters to pick from, and they will all either succumb or successfully retire and get replaced by new adventurers. A full chronicle can last anywhere between 24 and 192 acts, mostly falling around the middle of those extremes.
A short play campaign lets you complete a full campaign in a shorter time frame. You will control a single character until they either succumb or successfully retire. In this game mode there are no overarching legacy elements, apart from the progress made by your character. A short campaign lasts between 1 and 8 acts.
An endless chronicle lets you keep the legacy element of the standard chronicle, but it doesn't have a fixed end. You can keep creating new characters without end and keep playing until you get bored!
