The game takes its theme from the formation of the Saxon Shieldwall in an abstract form. The pieces reflect this being resin cast representations of stylized Norman and Saxon Infantry.
The objective of Shieldwall is to capture positions to the rear of the opponent's flanks. Offensive pieces can only attack in pairs and the defending pieces can be formed into stronger units called Shieldwalls.
The Designer claims that the rules are easy to learn yet the depth of strategy belies its apparent simplicity.
